Emberville Classes Guide: Knight, Warlock, Wanderer

Quick answer: Emberville has well over a dozen swappable combat classes across melee, magic, and ranged. Three are confirmed by name — the Wanderer (your starter), the Knight (defensive melee), and the Warlock (magic). You unlock more by leveling weapon/armor categories and rescuing NPCs, and you are never locked into one class.

How Classes Work

Classes behave like your weapons and armor: they level individually as you use them, and you can swap between any learned class at any time to fit the situation. Each class brings its own skills, abilities, and perks — and leveled classes can donate active and passive skills to other classes through skill inheritance.

Official source: Emberville on Steam — "choose from a wide selection of classes that can be changed at any time"

Confirmed Classes

Class Role What is confirmed
Wanderer Flexible starter First class, unlocked from a stranger in the dungeon; skill tree to level 40; Focus Strike and Swift Foot early skills (WayTooManyGames preview)
Knight Defensive melee Close-quarters fighter; Raise Shield and Counter Attack play off block/parry stats (see Knight guide)
Warlock Magic Named as one of the first revealed classes; details still thin pre-launch
12+ more Mixed "Well over a dozen classes" per COGconnected; names unrevealed

How to Unlock New Classes

Two confirmed paths, per the class system coverage:

  1. Level weapon and armor categories — using swords, bows, staves, and armor types opens related classes.
  2. Rescue townspeople — survivors teach you their classes when you free them and earn their trust.

Keep an eye out while exploring: classes are also found through tasks and missions, so questing doubles as class hunting. Pair this with NPC rescue.

Class Skill Slots

The Wanderer preview showed the template every class follows: as the class levels you equip two active and two passive skills from its tree, with multiple unlock tiers up to level 40. Inheritance then lets those slots borrow from other classes you have leveled.

No tier list yet

Any "best class" ranking published before October 27, 2026 is speculation — only three classes are even named. We will publish a real tier list once the EA build is playable and classes can be compared fairly.

Choosing Your First Direction

Playstyle Start here Key attribute
Fast melee skirmisher Wanderer + Focus Strike Strength
Ranged kiting Wanderer + Swift Foot, transition to bow classes Dexterity
Defensive frontline Knight (Raise Shield / Counter Attack) Strength + Stamina
Spellcaster Warlock (details pending) Intelligence

Attribute pairings: Stats and Attributes.

When to Swap: Scenario Guide

Free swapping is only powerful if you actually do it. Build the habit with these triggers:

Situation Swap to
Open room, scattered packs Wanderer / fast melee — clear speed
Tight corridor vs. hard hitters Knight — block and counter in place
Boss with adds (Matriarch) Bow kiter or Knight, never a slow caster
Farming easy floors for mastery Your least-leveled class — donor XP
Puzzle or NPC-heavy stretch Whatever is closest to its next unlock tier

The WayTooManyGames previewer kept Swift Foot equipped specifically because a fast bow character needs distance management — that is the mindset: every loadout answers a question the dungeon is asking.

Donor-Class Strategy

Because inheritance requires leveled donors, plan your leveling like an investment portfolio: one main class you push deepest, plus two donor classes you rotate through easy content. Priority donors pre-launch:

  1. Wanderer — you start here anyway; movement passives help every build.
  2. Knight — portable defense (Raise Shield) is universally useful.
  3. Your weapon's class — leveling the weapon unlocks its class for free, so the grind double-dips.

Do not spread evenly across six classes at once — depth unlocks inheritance tiers, breadth without depth equips nothing.

Reading a Class Tree (Wanderer Template)

The Wanderer preview shows how to evaluate any class tree at a glance. First, count the tiers — the Wanderer runs to 40, and tier depth tells you the leveling commitment before judging power. Second, identify the early picks (Focus Strike, Swift Foot): these define the class's first impression and its donor value floor. Third, locate the 2-active/2-passive slots and imagine your current build inside them — if two Wanderer skills improve your Knight today, the donor grind starts today. Fourth, note what is missing: no tree shows everything pre-launch, so missing tiers are future patches, not absent design. Apply this four-step read to every class reveal from here to 1.0.

When should I unlock my second class?

As soon as the game offers it — a second class is a second leveling track, and tracks compound. Even an unleveled second class unlocks its tree for study, letting you plan donor priorities before spending a single fight on it. Delay only if the unlock quest drags you past content your main cannot handle; otherwise, collect early, level deliberately.

FAQ

Can I change class mid-dungeon?

Swapping is free and unlimited between learned classes — previewers swapped on the fly to adapt. Whether there are combat restrictions (e.g. not mid-swing) is unconfirmed.

Do unused classes fall behind?

Classes level by use, so benched classes stay where you left them. Inheritance softens this: a maxed class keeps contributing skills to your active one.

How many classes will EA launch with?

"Well over a dozen" is the only number published. Expect the prologue three plus a first wave of rescues and weapon-gated unlocks — and a roster page here the moment names firm up.
